Fundraising for Trustees

Fundraising staff and Trustees are, in theory, on the same side.

In practice, they often operate with different assumptions, different pressures, and different ideas about what success looks like.

This session doesn't teach Trustees how to fundraise. It helps them understand the fundraising environment, what their fundraising team is actually dealing with day to day, and what they can do, from their position, to make a positive difference.

Over this 1-hour workshop we will explore:

  • how charities raise money differently from how companies make money, and why that matters for Trustee decisions

  • the main sources of income available to charities: what each involves, and what the evidence says about the risks attached to each

  • why different types of funder and donor give, and what Trustees can do to support these motivations

  • what a sustainable funding portfolio actually looks like, and how to distinguish genuine strategic planning from wishful thinking

  • the specific ways Trustees can add value at each stage of the fundraising cycle, and the ways they sometimes don't

You will leave feeling more confident talking about fundraising in Trustee meetings, with a clearer understanding of how to support your fundraising staff, and at least one thing you will think about differently.

Workshop structure: One hour; online or in person depending on availability and convenience for all attendees.
